Gifts...

Everyone that knows me knows the I have serious present anxiety. I HATE GETTING GIFTS. The two holiday I could go without for the rest of my life... My Birthday and Christmas.

At lunch today with my grandpa and my uncle we discussed my cousin's baby shower we will be attending this weekend in Virginia. What did you get her? what did you get her? The usual...

Until finally my grandpa brought up the fact that we buy too many presents for each other.

Here is a chronicled list... My family happens to celebrate Catholic Holidays so I'm throwing in those as well.
  • Baptism
  • Communion
  • Confirmation
  • Graduations: 5th, 8th, High School, College
  • Every Birthday until the child is about 21
  • Christmas
  • Easter (usually baskets or something)
  • Engagement
  • Bridal Shower
  • Wedding
  • Baby Shower
Now, another thing everyone knows about me is that I do not want to get married, nor do I want to have children. Which, leaves me extremely present-less. I will leave both those tasks however, for my younger brother to accomplish. My grandpa thanked me for this, that I would save him the wasted money... He then suggested i send around an little card every year or two saying... it's catie I'm still not married, I still don't have kids... how bout a present?

I then remembered this was a Sex and the City episode! Where Carrie gets her Manolos stolen at a baby party... then eventually sent a card to the person inviting them to a wedding... she was getting married to herself. That my friends. will. be. ME! : )

  1. Lol. I hate giving and getting presents as well. Im hard to shop for and I never know what to buy for anyone else. I've never really celebrated my birthday because I am NOT a party person. I feel like unless you are giving something that the person really needs, give a gift card to their favorite store and call it a day.

  2. i too don't want presents. this post reminded me of two of my own posts from a while back. one is about how much i hate 99% of all holidays and the others are about holidays i care about. i really only like MLK day and my sister's birthday (just b/c she loves it so much).

i have found that the best way for people to avoid getting you a gift, and vise versa, is to pro-offer a charity for the giving. just say "hey, don't get me something- go put X dollars towards Y charity!"
my favorites are penny-arcade.com one and doctors without borders.
